First introduced as a secondary peripheral for the original PlayStation, an updated version of the PlayStation console included the controller. Sony subsequently phased out the digital controller that was originally included with the console, as well as the Sony Dual Analog Controller. As of [update]over 28 million DualShock controllers have been sold under the brand's name, excluding bundled controllers.

The DualShock Analog Controller SCPHa controller capable of providing vibration feedback, was based on the onscreen actions taking place in the game if the game supports itas well as analog input through two analog sticks.

Its name derives from its use of two dual vibration motors shock. These motors are housed within the handles of the controller, with the left one being larger and more powerful than the one on the right, so as to allow for varying levels of vibration.

The Rumble Pak also uses batteries to power the vibration function while all corded varieties of the DualShock use power supplied by the PlayStation. However, some third party DualShock-compatible controllers use batteries instead of the PlayStation's power supply.

The rumble feature of the DualShock is similar to the one featured on the first edition of the Japanese Dual Analog Controllera feature that was removed shortly after that controller was released. The DualShock, like its predecessor the Dual Analog controller, has two analog sticks. Unlike the earlier controller, the DualShock's analog sticks feature textured rubber grips rather than the smooth plastic tips with recessed grooves found on the Dual Analog controller.

The Dual Analog controller also had an additional mode accessible by pressing the "Analog" button that provided compatibility with the PlayStation Analog Joystick which resulted in the analog indicator light turning green instead of red; this feature was removed in the DualShock.

The DualShock controller is widely supported; shortly after its launch most new games, including Crash Bandicoot: WarpedSpyro the Dragonand Tekken 3 include support for the vibration feature and dual analog sticksand Capcom re-released Resident Evil: Director's Cut and Resident Evil 2 with support for the controller added to these newer versions.

Some games designed for the Dual Analog's vibration capability, such as Porsche Challenge and Crash Bandicoot 2also work.

Many games take advantage of the presence of two motors to provide vibration effects in stereo including Gran Turismo and the PlayStation port of Quake II. What is that referring to? In this context, "digital" buttons have two states - on and off.

Meanwhile, "analog" buttons have multiple states, usually corresponding to how much pressure is being applied. Playstation controllers from the PS2 and PS3 generations typically have pressure-sensitive face buttons.

This means that the triangle, square, circle, and X buttons are not simply "on" or "off," but capable of detecting certain differences in the amount of force applied and reporting that to the game you're playing.

In a racing game, for instance, the throttle or brake controls might be mapped to one of these buttons, and the amount of pressure you apply determines how fast you speed up or slow down.

Most current-gen console controllers have at least a couple of other sets of analog inputs - the triggers, and the sticks. As the trigger has become more popular, the use of analog features of the face buttons has tended to decline. Categories Duane Degn Posts: 10, I read, a while back, on Wikipedia, the buttons on a PlayStation 2 controller are pressure sensitive. None of the PlayStation 2 Objects I've seen use the pressure information.

Since I hadn't seen any projects or objects that treated the buttons as analog inputs, I figured Wikipedia was wrong about the PS2 controller. In attempts to modify one of the PS2 objects for a recent project, I learned that the PS2 controller does indeed have pressure sensitive buttons. With the help of the internet, I've got the Prop to read these 12 analog button values. I personally think it is pretty cool to have this additional level of control from the PS2 controller.

I have no idea how I'll use these analog buttons in any of my current projects, but I like knowing they're there. I thought some of you might be interested in this information.

Are there any objects for the Propeller that read the analog button values? If not, I'll make sure and post the modified object.

Attached is the modified PlayStation 2 object and demo. Here's the output from the demo with the analog buttons turned on and with the square, circle and right arrow buttons pressed. Press "d" to enter digital mode.

Digital mode will turn off the analog buttons. Press "a" to enter analog mode. Press "b" to change to analog button mode. If not all ready in analog mode this option will change the controller to analog mode. Mode: Analog Joysticks and analog buttons in use. The parent object needs seven longs and 34 bytes to hold the controller information.

How PlayStation 2 Works

Once the PS2 object has been started, it doesn't need to be called again except to change modes. The controller is continuously polled with the new data continuously written to hub RAM. The demo will start out in digital mode boring ; you'll need to press "b" on the keyboard to turn on the analog buttons. I tried to add comments to explain how to use the object. Well, it took me a minute but I figured it out. If you've ever opened up a game controller, and I'm sure most of you regular visitors have, you've seen the same thing time and time again: little black pads under your buttons that connect two gold or silver pads on the PCB inside, completing a circuit.

The PS2 is completely different - the first thing you'll notice inside is that the 'PCB' has a single solid line across where the two halves of a normal PCB button would be. I'll skip the rest and jump to the theory. The bottom of the black pads are rounded like the bottom of a sphere, instead of flat like most controllers.

As the button is pressed farther and farther down, more and more of the button comes into contact with the 'strip' on the PCB. The resistance of the button is lower than that of the strip, so this results in more and more voltage being passed through to the controlling chip. Pardon my amazing lack of art skills.

You may or may not be able to see here how the pad comes down to the strip, and as it makes more contact the signal passes through the lower-resistance pad instead of the strip - signalling the button's differing pressure. I do have a fear, but I'm sure that Sony's thought it out and my fears are groundless hahahahaha! If you get better results from pressing harder on your buttons, aren't they going to wear out too damned fast? I mean, chances are any heavy gameplay has worn out your current sony pads already!

For example, if you barely press X, and you are playing a driving game, the game will allow you to drive slow, not all out.

If you press the X button all the way down, it will go all out. When the analog light is off, the controller is in digital mode, which means the buttons are on or off, there is no in-between.
